MUTARE- Manica Youth Assembly (MAYA) donated a wheelchair to Tonderai Chirara on the 29th of November in Sakubva, Ward 1 under the Give Back to the Community project (GBC). Tonderai’s wheelchair was now cutting some parts of his body due to the exposed metal surfaces.
MAYA is a grassroots community based youth organisation in Mutare. The wheelchair was handed over by MAYAs Programs Officer Tinashe Muzama and was received by Tonderai’s mother Rudo Timburwa.
The handover was an emotional moment for Tonderai. The moment he saw the MAYA team entering his yard with the wheelchair, he not help but to burst into tears of joy to the extent of saying out prayers even before formal introductions were made.
MAYA Disability Desk Coordinator Rutendo Makamure is tasked with locating and identifying disabled persons who may be in need. The officer will then work with young people in that community to look at possible ways of helping the situation. This is what led to the wheelchair donation.
She stressed out that, during these 16 Days of Activism against Gender Based Violence, young people and women with disabilities need to come out in the open so that they could be helped.
