ZICOSU expel vice president and six others

Zimbabwe Congress of Students Union expelled six members of their union including the vice president on allegations that they were planning to oust their president.

Last week ZICOSU vice president Stanley Moyo masqueraded and purported to be representing the union and hold a press conference passing a vote of no confidence on the president of the union Tonderai Chidawa accusing him of mismanaging the union.

Counter attacking the expulsion of the president, ZICOSU held their First General Council of Seventh national meetings, the union passed a vote of no confidence to the six members whom they accused of conducting an illegal press conference after they forged union member’s signature to oust the current president.

Allegations that led to the expulsion of Stanley Moyo and his six accomplices from ZICOSU executive are that they are alleged to be sponsored by the ousted Zanu PF spokesperson Rugare Gumbo and former Hurungwe West Zanu PF chairman Temba Mliswa and they were also alleged that they are no longer students of any university or college in the country.

ZICOSU president Tonderai Chidawa said his expulsion at an illegal press conference last week was unconstitutional as the union members did not agree with it.

“The vice president and his six other members plotted my removal from the union’s presidency yet I had suspended them from the union because they were no longer students of any college or university in the country,” he said.

According to the ZICOSU constitution if a student finishes or completes his/her studies they cease to be members of the union.

Chidawa added that it was a unilateral decision by the disciplinary committee that the vice president and his six accomplices cease to be members of the union during the extraordinary meeting.

The ousted ZICOSU vice president alleged that the president Chidawa was using a fake identity card with the vice president’s Mnangagwa surname and was in a habit of using his power to sexually abuse the union’s girls which he disputed.

“The allegations that were labeled against me that I use an identity card with vice president’s Mnangagwa surname are malicious and damaging (showing his identity card) this is my name Tonderai Chidawa which I use,” said Chidawa.

Scenes got ugly at the ZICOSU First General Council Union’s meeting after the expelled members turned violent protesting their dismal but the anti-riot police were quick to move in to curb the situation.

ZICOSU applauded the Minster in charge of Higher and Tertiary education Oppah Muchinguri for assisting the youth in various programmes.

“I would like to thank Minster Muchinguri for her active role in making sure that the fund for youth’s project is available,” said Tonderai Chidawa.
