The Zimbabwe Liberation War Veterans Association yesterday issued a statement demanding that the minimum age for a President in Zimbabwe must be 52 years to avoid immature national leaders. The association called for an urgent amendment of the constitution to put into effect this proposal.
Addressing a press conference in Harare, Generational Consensus and Zimbabwe Youth Alliance responded saying they are shocked and deeply concerned by the archaic, reckless and idiotic utterances by few misguided pro ZANU PF War Veterans.
“Our constitution is founded on the principles of fairness, equality, justice, democracy and it recognises fundamental rights of citizens and sets a reasonable framework for all demographic groups to participate and enjoy their fair share in national issues such as politics read the statement”
Pride Mkono representing Generational Consensus said, “it is a shame that this malcontent thinks that only old men and women must have exclusive right to access high public office and its attendant responsibilities therefore”.
“This is a tyranny of the highest order and should be stopped in its wake that the purveyors of such a charade do so under the guise of the liberation struggle is an insult to the thousands of young people who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our national independence”, he added.
“We therefore call on government, which is sponsoring this madness, to draw its attention to the economic collapse. There are shortages of fuel, cash, medicine and basic commodities and not waste resources of the state sponsoring such a charade is a mockery to tax payers”.
As a movement, we will soon embark on a nationwide mobilisation of young people to demand that this government must never amend our constitution to spite its progressive provisions.
“As Zimbabwean young people we draw inspiration from Father Zimbabwe, Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo who said, “this country will never die because its young people will save it” concluding the statement.
