University of Zimbabwe (UZ) buckled under pressure and reinstated two senior lecturers it had suspended after other senior doctors threatened to resign en masse
Vice Chancellor Paul Mapfumo rescinded his suspension of doctors Mbuwayesango and Chimbuka as pressure swelled for the resinstatement of the two respected academics and surgeons.
UZ vice-chancellor Paul Mapfumo suspended leading pediatrician Bothwell Mbuwayesango and cardiac expert David Chimbuka “without pay and benefits” in a letter dated October 7 2019.
Yesterday, UZ department of surgery doctors informed the institution that they were not happy with the suspension of their colleagues, hence had decided to resign in solidarity until their colleagues are.
They also reportedly argued that all doctors were on strike so that their salaries could be reviewed; hence they see no reason why only two doctors should be suspended.
The UZ department of surgery is a significant player in health provision at public medical institutions and the new development will cause the stoppage of all surgeries.
Mbuwayesango attained near celebrate status in Zimbabwe after leading a group of doctors who separated con-joined twins in 2014.
