Harare, Zimbabwe – The National Democratic Working Group (NDWG) which is led by Job Sikhala, has sounded the alarm on the alleged escalating governance crisis in Zimbabwe, citing a dire need for democratic reforms to address the country’s alleged plummeting democratic space, widespread suffering, and crippling drought.

During their executive meeting in Bulawayo on June 8, 2024, the NDWG condemned what it termed “illegitimate regime led by President Emmerson Mnangagwa”, blaming it for the nation’s woes. The organization highlighted the staggering unemployment rate, meager salaries, repression of workers and students, and the devastating drought that has left the nation reeling.

In response, the NDWG announced to the media Tuesday morning that they will prioritize the people’s will in shaping the country’s future. Intensify grassroots consultations, paving the way for a national democratic convention and develop a roadmap with clear timelines for the inclusive national consultative process.

NDWG Acting Chairman Dr. Wurayayi Zembe emphasized the need for a citizen-driven approach, stating, “The people’s wishes are the cornerstone of our quest for democratic reforms.”

“As Zimbabwe teeters on the brink of collapse, the NDWG’s call for urgent reforms has resonated with the populace, who are demanding a clear timeline for the consultation process. The organization’s efforts may prove pivotal in shaping Zimbabwe’s democratic future,” said Dr. Zembe.
