Chitungwiza Residents Trust Director, Ms Alice Kuvheya, has warned the local council against its reluctance towards the prevention of drainage flooding as the country looks forward to receiving the forecasted normal to above normal rainfalls.
Responding to questions sent to her by this reporter, Kuvheya noted that the past rain season was a period of innumerable losses as Chitungwiza was hit by flash floods that were mainly blamed on the poor drainage system.
“Many people lost their houses and properties due to the flash floods. Council does not take the responsibility of putting proper drainage systems seriously,” said Ms Kuvheya.
Areas like Unit L, K and N, Zengeza 4 and Chikwanha, were ravaged by floods in January this year.
Chitungwiza Mayor, Councilor Lovemore Maiko blamed the scanty allocation from the devolution fund as the major setback in their development agenda, but the residents could not have none of that.
Some senior residents in the highly populated city noted that in the old days, Council used to take drain opening as a routine mandate every pre-rain season. Various other taxpaying citizens in the area expressed concern over Council’s inactivity saying that Councilors are only worried about votes but are not keen on service delivery.
“We advise Council to install and maintain proper drainage systems before the rain season comes again. Council must be reverent in the discharge of their duty as City Fathers, and as we all know, prevention is better than cure,” said Kuvheya
