Cracks are emerging in President Emmerson Mnanagawa’s advisory council after one of the members and businessman Shingi Munyeza on Wednesday went public saying that the regime does not have the capacity to resolve Zimbabwe’s problems.
Munyeza made the damning comments at the Second National Citizens Convention in the capital on Wednesday. The convention was convened by Citizen Manifestop and was attended by hundred of community based organization from across the country.
“Zimbabwe’s recovery from the current crisis is doomed since there is no nation that recovers without its own currency, without international and regional support and without trust and confidence.” Munyeza said.
“The country tried to slowdown the speeding train in November 2017, but this marked the beginning of runaway prices of basic goods.”
The country’s new currency introduced in June has plummeted over 1 000% since nostro accounts were separated from local electronic balances generally referred to as RTGS dollar. The new dollar yesterday was trading at 20:1 to the US dollar on the parallel market, while 15:1 on the interbank market.
Many industries have scaled down on production as they struggle to get foreign currency to purchase spares and inputs critical for their production.
The country has also witnessed several industrial action activities by civil servants particularly doctors and other health professionals who claim incapacitation as their salaries have been eroded by inflation.
Mnangagwa has tried, but to no avail to find a financial rescue package from both Western and Eastern countries as financiers cite political risk and unmet demands for political reforms.
The opposition, on the other hand, has been piling on pressure on the beleaguered regime calling on national protests until Mnangagwa comes to the negotiating table for a power sharing agreement. The opposition MDC led by Nelson Chamisa has since July 30, 2018 elections been disputing the presidential result outcome despite that it was confirmed by the Constitutional Court.
