Magistrate Postpones Chipinge Villagers’ Matter To 13 March

By Staff Reporter

The 25 Chipinge villagers from Mahachi area who appeared before Chipinge Magistrates court today, the 11th of March 2024 for trial, had their matter postponed to 13 March 2024 for judgement.

The villagers from Mahachi area are in court facing eviction from the land that their ancestors occupied since 1935.

For the third time in a row, the state has failed to bring witnesses.

Commenting on the matter, Claris Madhuku of Platform for Youth and Community Development (PYCD), “this confirms that the matter has no merit but constructed to intimidate and harass vulnerable villagers. The over 400 villagers from Mahachi village under Chief Musikavanhu will need to travel 260 km to and from Chipinge to answer to these unbefitting allegations.”

Following the recent spate of evictions in the country, the Government of Zimbabwe is yet to assess the impact of these evictions that are largely state-driven.

Advocate Tariro Tazvitya is representing the villagers taking instructions from Professor Lovemore Madhuku. Justice Alfred Chinembiri is presiding over the case.
