Millions of women around the world commemorated International women’s Day on Sunday under the theme ‘Make it happen’ as they honoured the achievements of women around the world and fought for greater equality.
Back home, women in Epworth celebrated International women’s day in an event that attracted more than 130 women. Marchers started at the Overspill shopping centre and walked more than 2km to the local board in Epworth to commemorate the day. The event was organised by the Media Centre along with the Women in Politics Support Unit (WIPSU) and The Zimbabwe Young Women’s Network of peace Building.
Proceedings started with speeches from the local female Councillors who implored women to respect their husbands and castigated domestic violence.
‘Women must promote each other by voting themselves into leadership positions’ said Councillor Mazhandu. If we do not uplift each other we will continue to be downtrodden’ she added.
The event was concluded with a drama that educated women about gender based violence. Women were urged report any domestic violence to the police and not suffer in silence.
However international women’s day is not all about domestic violence but the celebration of achievements of women while calling for more gender equality.
Epworth women are already moving towards this goal after they managed to notch two seats out of seven for women as Councillors.
Women are making inroads especially in political positions with more and more women taking up political leadership positions.
Many women have done extraordinary things and this day is meant to celebrate their achievements.
