According to national police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi, the accident occurred around 8pm near Gandanzara Business Centre, approximately 44km along the Nyabadza-Gandanzara Road. The parishioners were returning to their rural homes in Sherukuru, Mutasa District.
Investigations are ongoing, but it has been established that the bus experienced multiple mechanical faults, including a faulty clutch, before the incident. As the driver, Ray Donald Mugari, attempted to investigate the source of smoke coming from the engine, a ball of fire engulfed the bus. While Mugari and 57 passengers managed to escape through the door and emergency exit windows, eight people were trapped and burnt to death.
Six victims are currently hospitalized, with two suffering from severe burns. DNA tests are being conducted to identify the charred remains of the eight deceased parishioners.
The bus company involved, Pashon Link, has had its operating licence revoked, and both the owner and driver are facing prosecution. The government has expressed condolences to the bereaved families and is working to assist those affected.
This tragic incident highlights the importance of road safety and vehicle maintenance, and an investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.
