ED retires senior military officials

By Princess Mapona

President ED Mnangagwa today retired senior military officers and reassigned them to the diplomatic services.

In a press statement, Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet Dr Misheck J. M. Sibanda announced the decision by President Mnangagwa to retire and reassign senior military officers.

“The decision by His Excellency the President Cde Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa, to retire and reassign senior military officers to the Diplomatic Service in line with Government’s critical global engagement and re-engagement strategy,” read the statement.

The officers who are set to join the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade pending finalisation of diplomatic consultations are: Major General Martin Chedondo, Major General Douglas Nyikayaramba, Major General Anselem Sanyatwe and Air Vice Marshall Sheba Shumbayawonda.

Political Analyst Alex Magaisa said, “the retired generals have been given an opportunity to pasture. So these top generals have been sent out to pasture except not on account of old age. Will be interesting to see how experts on security apparatus interpret these retirements.”

Part of the list is Major General Anselm Nhamo Sanyatwe – the man who commanded soldiers that shot six civilians in Harare’s central business district on August 1, 2018.
