Moyougare Village, Buhera – The devastating effects of deforestation have left a trail of destruction in Moyougare Village, Ward 27, Buhera, with soil erosion and wildlife conflict becoming major concerns. Village Head Shackmore Moyougare has taken bold steps to address the issue, conducting public awareness campaigns and enforcing laws to protect the environment.
The laws imposed by Village Head Moyougare state that anyone found cutting down trees without permission will be fined, either in cash or livestock. The move aims to curb the rampant deforestation, largely driven by the demand for firewood.
“Deforestation is leading to soil erosion, river siltation, and reduced rainfall,” Headman Moyougare explained. “We urge people to seek alternative energy sources like biogas and solar energy to protect our environment.”
The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) has joined the fight against deforestation, promoting renewable energy sources in rural Zimbabwe.
“We’ve installed biogas digesters in 150 households, providing sustainable energy and reducing deforestation,” the UNDP reported.
The efforts come as deforestation continues to ravage rural communities, fueled by illegal logging, veld fires, infrastructure development, and charcoal production. The collective action aims to mitigate the climate change catastrophe and preserve the environment for future generations.
