The Centre for Community Development of Zimbabwe (CCDZ) advocacy officer George Makoni has been arrested whilst presenting a petition to the Harare City council over allegation of corruption levelled against council workers.
The petition submitted to the Mayor, Councilor Bernard Manyenyeni read:
“…you (Manyenyeni) should address the problem in which the city of Harare Senior Management continue to receive hefty salaries (in breach of the Cabinet directive issued in 2014 and other perks at the expense of service delivery by 31st November 2016).
“…the council addresses the welfare of vendors. Harare Municipal police must cease to harass vendors forthwith and allow them to conduct their business without any hindrance.”
The petition also called for council to address the plight of citizens whose houses were recently demolished by the city of Harare.
Councillor Manyenyeni has since denied the allegation leveled against him on the allocation and politicization of residential stands.
He said “Some of the issues of corruption being leveled against our workers are not true but we cannot simply ignore them. Before the end of the year the council will carry out an audit and those complaining will get answers.”
