Citizens Demand Impartiality in Food Handouts Amidst Looming Hunger Crisis
By Nhau Mangirazi
KAROI – Citizens have called on policy makers to ensure impartiality in food distribution following the declaration of a national disaster due to looming hunger. The calls were made during a livelihood and citizens forum held in Karoi, which aimed to address issues affecting people’s rights.
Residents expressed concerns that food distribution has been politicized, with suspected opposition members being left out. Joyce Mapanda, a local resident, said,
“Food distribution has been politicized, and we urge policy makers to exercise impartiality in their distribution.”
Moses Mabara, another resident, added that even when money was demanded for Pfumvudza collection, they were never allowed to get any seed in Karoi town.
In response, Karoi Finance Committee Chairman, Muzondiwa Savanje, emphasized that the local authority’s core values are anchored on development and equality among all citizens.
“We implore civic organizations, churches, media, and all stakeholders to embrace our goals and foster development,” he said.
Reverend Isaac Chamonyonga, Chairperson of Hurungwe Pastors Fraternity, pledged the church’s support in fostering social cohesion and development through peace and openness. Joel Zilala, Chairperson of Hurungwe Community Radio Initiative, promised to report stories without bias.
Ernest Mudzengi, Director of Media Centre, emphasized that such meetings are vital for duty bearers to engage citizens on their rights.
“Duty bearers and citizens must work together. These forums remain crucial for social and economic development in every society,” he said.
Savanje reiterated that it is every citizen’s right to foster social cohesion and development through peace and openness. The Karoi Finance Committee is working with all government departments, including the District Development Coordinator office and the Department of Social Welfare, to ensure that everyone is catered for.
The meeting was facilitated by Hurungwe Pastors Fraternity in partnership with Hurungwe Community Radio Initiative and Media Centre.
