The matter between Anjin Diamond Company and its 200 former security workers who include 5 women took a new twist on Monday when the Deputy Sherriff went to attach property worth more than USD 100 000 at a Chinese company’s offices in Borrowdale.
The operation was latter stopped after the Deputy Sherriff received a call telling him to stop the operation. However one of the company’s top of the range Vehicle, a V8 Land Cruiser registration number 9868 had already been towed away from the premises to a Harare auction.
The workers who were unlawfully dismissed from work are demanding USD 837 00 for compensation and arrears, which accumulated during their days as Anjin employees.
Speaking to this publication, one of the women who spoke on condition of anonymity said that, they are living in fear after some individual Chinese promised them unspecified action.
“After our unfair dismissal from Anjin, we are now living in fear since we were promised to be dealt with accordingly by certain individuals from Anjin” said the source.
Asked about how they are surviving after their dismissal, she said that she was struggling to meet day-to-day life expenses since she is a widow.
“We are struggling to meet our daily expenses since we are no longer employed and I am a widow, I have a family to feed, my kids are still going to school and they expect everything from me, life is just difficult for me and my family, I hope we will get something from Anjin so that I start a small business for my family” said the woman.
Women in Zimbabwe are facing a myriad of challenges due to poor governance in different institutions.
Efforts to get a comment from Anjin legal representative Jacob Mafume proved fruitless as his mobile phone went unanswered.
Chinese employers have been on record of abusing workers in Zimbabwe and they usually go unpunished because of their political links with the ruling party’s leadership.
Zimbabwe adopted the look East policy after the government was slammed by sanctions with the European Union (EU) and the United States of America (U.S.A).
Meanwhile the attachment of property has been stopped through an urgent chamber application, which was filed on the 15th of June 2015 by Jacob Mafume who is legal representative for Anjin (Private ) Limited.
