CHIPINGE: A married woman allegedly attempted suicide on Monday in Chipinge after she was beaten by husband for not covering maheu.
”Thandiwe Mufusirwa is married to Amon Makhandele and do reside in Manzvire village ward 22 in Chipinge. On the day in question, the two were preparing to go for a brick molding project after which the wife had prepared maheu to drink while at work. She left the container of maheu uncovered and upon arrival the husband asked why the container was not covered yet there are cholera reports? Thandiwe’s response did not go well with her husband who smacked her in the face. Thandiwe rushed to the storeroom (hozi) and took a bottle of fenkill,” a villager narrated.
Some minutes later the husband followed and see the wife drinking undiluted fenkill. He jumped and took the bottle. Without delays, he rushed the wife to hospital in a wheelbarrow. Luckily, he met a truck which was going the same direction and got a lift to Manzvire clinic where she received medication. “She is recovering right now”, said a villager.
Platform for Youth Development Trust Gender Officer Cynthia Gwenzi said, “it was unfortunate that people were still resorting to suicide”.
“We are appealing to members of the public to ensure that they always seek counselling from third parties as this incident could have been avoided,” she added.
The nurse we contacted said she is not qualified to speak to the media team. ‘Yes we have received a patient of that nature but I cannot go on giving details for am not qualified to do so”
