The Broadcasting Authority of Zimbabwe (BAZ) has set 19- 29 August 2014 as the dates for the public hearings for prospective provincial commercial radio stations which will be convened in Masvingo, Zishavane, Gweru, Mutare and Kariba.
In July this year, the BAZ postponed the hearings countrywide citing “unforeseen circumstances”. The regulatory authority, however, did not disclose the dates for similar hearings in Bulawayo and Harare.
Shortlisted for the hearings are AB Communications owned radios; Gogogo FM (Masvingo); Ya FM (Zvishavane) and Faya FM (Gweru).
Other hearings will be conducted for Diamond FM in Mutare under the state-controlled Zimpapers and NyamiNyami FM under Kingstons holdings in Kariba.
BAZ said it would announce dates for the remaining seven public inquiries in due course.
Meanwhile, the other shortlisted applicants are: FairTalk Communications (Pvt) Ltd trading as SKYZ Metro, Skies Radio (Pvt) Ltd trading as Skies FM, Carryslot (Pvt) Ltd trading as Skyz FM and FairTalk Communications trading as Breeze FM in Victoria Falls.
Skies FM is reportedly being bankrolled by Transport Minister Obert Mpofu while Skyz Metro is fronted by Qhubani Moyo and Cont Mhlanga. Skyz FM is owned by Alpha Media Holdings, publishers of NewsDay, Standard and Zimbabwe Independent.
