19 January 2018 – Former MDC Treasurer Roy Bennett (60) and his wife Heather (55) died yesterday in a helicopter crash in Canada.
The MDC released a statement confirming his death.
“The MDC is greatly saddened by the untimely passing of democratic struggle veteran Roy Bennett and his wife Heather in a tragic helicopter crash in Canada today (yesterday)” ,said in a statement.
The party described Bennett as a selfless servant of the people, brave and dedicated cadre and noted that the struggle and the movement are much poorer without him.
Bennett was imprisoned for a year after he pushed the Finance and Economic Planning Minister Patrick Chinamasa on the ground during a debate in Parliament in 2004.
The deceased was a former member of the House of Assembly for Chimanimani, and was tenderly known as “Pachedu” (meaning amongst us).
“We have lost a fighter ,a gallant son ,a patriot ,a man who loved his country who loved his fellow people his death should be a reminder that we should continue with the struggle” ,said Nelson Chamisa ,the Vice President of MDC.
He is survived by a daughter, Casey and a son, Charles.
