No Clinic s in retreat

By Staff Reporter

Residents in a Harare settlement of ‘Retreat’ near uplands waterfalls are living in squalid conditions without adequate health facilities.

The settlement was born out of a cooperative by ruling party activists as many people bought stands and built their makeshift houses.
“There are no clinics here and we have to spend a lot of money on transport to go to the clinic in waterfalls or elsewhere.” Said Christina Chitima

This situation has hit hard especially on pregnant women who fail to access maternal care timeosly.
“There is no clinic nearby for us to go for check-up and many of us have lost our unborn babies as a result” said Prudence Chataika.

Residents there have called for the authorities to at least provide a makeshift health facility to ensure that they get reliable primary health care.

Zimbabwe’s maternal mortality rates have not declined in recent years and lack of health facilities and qualified personnel has been blamed as some of the reasons.
